Itinerary and locations
The Dolomites are a vast area (about 16,000 sq. km) comprising many mountain groups, valleys, meadows, and lakes. In order to allow us to visit as many locations as possible and minimize driving time, we'll spend roughly half of our time in the western part of it, basing ourselves in the Val Gardena - Gröden are, and half of it in the east, using Cortina as our base.
The workshop will start and end at Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE). From there we will drive to the Dolomites in comfortable, multi-seater vans. It might be possible, but not guaranteed, to arrange pickup in Milan or Verona, in case one of those airports might be more convenient for you. Please enquire about this at the time of booking.
From those bases we will typically do a drive in the morning to reach a sunrise location. Then, when time permits, we'll be back to our hotel for a hearty breakfast and some rest, conversation, and review of the photos of the previous day.
In the late morning and early afternoon we might photograph subjects that also work well in midday light, like deep valleys, ravines, and waterfalls.
After this, we might return to our hotel for some more rest or drive directly to our sunset location, depending on distance and weather conditions.
We plan to photograph most or all of the following locations and possibly more:
- Tre Cime di Lavaredo - Drei Zinnen
- Cinque Torri
- Alpe di Siusi - Seiser Alm
- Sassolungo - Langkofel
- Passo Gardena – Grödner Joch
- Lake Misurina
- Lake Antorno
- Lake Braies - Pragser Wildsee
- Seceda
- Santa Maddalena in Val di Funes - St. Magdalena, Villnösstal
- Passo Giau
- Baita Segantini, Passo Rolle
Please notice that this is an incomplete list that is subject to change, depending on weather conditions. The weather in the mountains is always unpredictable, so we'll have to be flexible and ready to change our itinerary at the last minute.
This is an intensive workshop, during which we will stay outdoors as much as possible and exploit every possible opportunity to take advantage of the light conditions. At that time of the year, at those latitudes, sunrise will be at around 7.30AM and sunrise at around 6.30PM. If the weather permits it, we will be up well before sunrise to reach a location. Most of the days, we won't be back until after sunset and dinners might be late.
There will be some hiking to do, sometimes on sloping terrain. Make sure your fitness level is adequate for the type of activities we will be doing. If in doubt, contact me and I'll provide you with more details.
